Personal Style AudactyFrom attending casual gatherings to cocktail parties, I want my personal style to enter everyone’s mind long before my size. Knowing I look my personal best gives me confidence in pretty much any situation, but this is all the more true when attending events where I don’t know the majority of the people; whether I’m attending with my husband or alone.

When I’m alone, I aim to be the most appropriately and best dressed woman in attendance. There’s nothing like the boost of confidence the right outfit can give you when walking into a room of strangers. Plus, how you look goes a long way to set the tone for conversations and possible networking relationships.

When I’m with my husband, dressing well is top priority for me for more than one reason. First and foremost, I want him to feel proud to be with me – that he has the most beautiful and intelligent woman in the room on his arm. Second I want people focused on how fabulous my clothes are because, let’s be honest, people can be very judgmental about size and having a husband who is visually trimmer than you seems to make you an even greater target of less than complimentary comments from some people. Having a stylish, polished look tends to minimize those kinds of comments from making their way to your or his ears.

So how do you create this personal style that’s puts the focus on you instead of just your size? Here’s my five best tips for creating a stand out personal style:

  1. Wearing beautifully fitting clothing – tailoring and custom-sized clothes from places like Eshakti.com can take an average looking piece of clothing to exceptional. Every woman deserves clothes that fit her perfectly! There’s a big difference between thinking “well, it fits” in the dressing room and knowing “it fits me like a dream.”
  2. Select exceptionally designed clothing – you’re looking for shape/cut, fabric type, lining when needed, and details like buttons and stitching. When you look at it or hold it, is it amazing? Does it make you feel like you have to have it? If the answer is no, move on to the next piece!
  3. Find your best colors – Everyone has colors that make them look simply stunning. Do you know what yours are? I can bet you it isn’t black! Find yours and fill your wardrobe with them. (Don’t listen to those crazy blanket statements like “redheads look great in brown,” try on the rainbow and figure out what really works best on your unique skin tone and shade of hair color.
  4. Accent with great accessories – Statement necklaces and earrings can take an outfit from average to amazing. Bracelets, pins, bags, and scarves are also great options. Pick one statement piece for each look and keep the rest minimal. You don’t want to look like you’ve been paying dress up in your Grandma’s jewelry box. When in doubt, it’s still a good rule to take off one piece.  It’s a rare occasion when wearing a necklace, earrings, bracelet, pin and scarf with a bold bag is really going to be a great look.
  5. Finish it off with fabulous shoes – never underestimate the power of a great pair of shoes to transform an outfit and draw attention.  Colored and detailed shoes are especially useful for making a statement. Just make sure that the style truly compliments your base pieces and doesn’t compete with them.

When you pull a look together following these tips, don’t be surprised if you feel like you can rule the world.

2015 Plus-Size Style ResolutionsAs 2014 rolled into 2015, I started thinking about what my resolutions should be for this year. While most everyone I know was going on about how they were going to work on their exercise, eating, professional aspirations, or relationships all I could think about was my style and what’s next. Standing in the closet staring at my clothes and shoes as I was trying to decide what to wear, it all became so clear. 2015 is the year that my collection of shoes, bras, and jeans get a makeover.

A quick look at about 30 pairs of shoes quickly revealed that I really only have about 10 that I consider “wearable” for more than an hour or so. Another 10 are special occasion shoes – also known as beautiful must haves that I just can’t let go of because I just like to look at them even if I almost never wear them. The rest are completely useless and desperately need to be replaced by what I now call “good” shoes and my great grandmother would have called “sensible” shoes. Sensible shoes have come a long way since her days thankfully! Dansko is one of my favorite brands of good shoes. They’re well-made, comfortable, and look good a long time. The two pairs that already grace my collection surely will love some company.

And then there’s the whole bra issue. A quick glance at the top shelf in my closet reveals a huge pile of bras that have failed me. If you’re a fan of underwire bras like I am, I’m sure you are familiar with the whole “poke” issue as wires break through their casing and try to stab you. I’m down to about a dozen decent bras again and zero that I’d consider to be great. Pretty sad considering I know all too well how important a good foundation is to having great style. I really love my Izod bras but they only survive a few short months of wearing and washing. I’m sure they’d all last better if I’d hand wash them, but let’s get real, I’m a busy mom, grandma, wife, and professional and don’t have time to do that. So this year the search is on to find the elusive underwire bra that delivers the comfort, shape, and durability of my dreams.

Ah, jeans – the basics of chilly weekends. Actually, the search for the perfect jeans is already off to a good start, this resolution is mostly about purging the old and stocking up on the new. You see, recently I bought a couple pairs of trouser jeans in indigo. They have quickly become my favorite and I’ve absolutely dreaded wearing my skinny jeans since I bought them. With my pear shape, skinny jeans just aren’t flattering. Honestly, I should probably extend this resolution to leggings as well. Not sure if your fitted bottoms are a good look for you? Take a good look in the mirror with full natural light or at least bright lights. I found that every dimple showed like I had been in a hail storm – not my best look.  Trouser jeans, on the other hand, give me a polished look. I found mine at Belk. They carry the Gloria Vanderbilt Plus Size Amanda Dazzle jeans in the Women’s department that are the perfect pairing of stretch denim and tailoring. I’m nominating six pairs of skinny jeans and leggings to make their way to the donation pile.

Resolutions don’t have to feel like drudgery. Your style is an endlessly evolving thing in your life, so it’s the one thing that you can always put in your resolutions and look forward to working on.  Last year I spent a lot of time working on finding dresses that worked with my curves and great accessories to finish off outfits. These sections of my closet make me smile since I know I can easily pull together a look that rocks with them. What’s in your closet that needs revamping?

As a plus size woman, finding really cute flats for wide feet can be a serious challenge so I had to share my favorite finds from Payless Shoes – the Claire, Chaire, Caroline, and Blaire Scrunch Flats from the dexFlex Comfort line. While the names vary, they are all basically the same base shoe with varying decoration, fabrics, and colors. The really great thing about these flats is their elasticized top edge design and flexible sole. This keeps the shoes from slipping off your heels and gives them a great comfortable fit for walking and dancing. This flat design has been a staple in their inventory for quite a while now and they have been consistent with sizing and quality.  I’m on my second pair of black Claire Scrunch flats this fall, having worn the first pair constantly throughout the last year.  I love that these flats look great with jeans, skirts, and dresses alike. With their comfort sole, they’re really great for everyday.

I just bought the new red Claire Scrunch flats for the holidays in an 11 wide. The picture online shows a rich red and when they arrived, they were better than I hoped. Red shoes are definitely my favorite! These worked great with a navy dress for Thanksgiving, jeans for Black Friday shopping, and are perfect for pairing with the red crinoline skirt I bought from Eshakti.com to wear for Christmas. Ultimately, these will replace my black pair as my favorites! I’m really tempted to order a second pair before this awesome color disappears.

Quick tips: One thing to keep in mind is that since these have the elasticized top, you may be able to wear a regular width as well, I personally have a mix of 10W, 11, an 11W sized in my closet to fit my feet throughout all stages of puffiness. I usually wear them barefoot, but they also work with no show footie socks if you need a little extra warmth or have sweaty feet. (Did you know a quick spray of antiperspirant on the bottom of your feet does wonders to minimize the the sweaty feet issue and keep your shoes smelling great?)

Here’s a look at my collection of these great flats:

What to Wear to a Company Holiday Party: 10 Plus Size Holiday Cocktail Dresses

Trying to figure out what to wear to your holiday company party as a plus size woman can be an interesting challenge. Naturally, there’s always the “little black dress” option, though it’s so predictable and plus size women tend to wear too much black as it is. This event is just begging for you to pick something a little more festive and colorful – after all, it’s a holiday! Think jewel tones like amethyst, emerald, ruby, sapphire, and topaz.

In my own search for the perfect holiday dress for my husband’s company party at a wonderful resort, I found that there are an abundance of wonderful options just waiting to be purchased this year. It seems like everyday the selection at my favorite stores just keeps getting better. Picking just one dress was incredibly hard. Here are some of my favorites with links to the sites they are available on:

In the end, I decided to order the floral jacquard wrap style dress custom sized and mid-calf length from Eshakti.com. I love the red and black combination that is a little bit shimmery metallic without being to glitzy. It’s a dress that I’m sure will be a favorite for years to come. The other great thing about this dress is the pockets that are plenty big to hold your lipstick, id and debit card, and even phone. I’m not a big fan of carrying an evening bag since it’s inevitable you’ll end up leaving it unattended on a table while dancing.

When picking out your holiday dress, be sure to think about what shoes and accessories will work with it. If you’ll be dancing the night away, you’ll want a style that will work with shoes in your closet that are comfortable – there’s nothing worse than wearing new shoes that are killing your feet for dancing. Also keep in mind what kind of wrap or coat will work with it if you’re somewhere cold – some dresses are less than winter coat friendly and you don’t want to be freezing!

It’s hard to believe that it’s time to start thinking about what to wear for holiday parties already, but the clock is ticking, especially if you want to custom order something. I’ve spent quite a few evenings scouring the web for just the right looks. I was really tempted by the Anna Scholz Jewel Print Dress and Anna Scholz Ombre Maxi Dress at Simply Be, but having the fit be an unknown I kept looking. I received an ad from Eshakti.com this morning, so I decided to take a look at their site again since I’m a big fan of their customization service. I’ve been watching their site for weeks looking for just the right outfit, but hadn’t come across anything new and exciting. Until today, that is. Lucky me, they updated their catalog again and I found the perfect outfit for a cocktail party and picked up a bonus top, plus they were all on sale and I had a coupon code. Can you say total score!

I’ve been looking for some separates to add some spice to my wardrobe, so the idea of a skirt and top set were at the top of my mind. This Pleat neck ponte knit tee in black  and Dahlia crinoline in red caught my eye right away and were an easy choice, plus red and black are favorites of mine anytime and absolutely perfect for the holidays.  I love the simplicity and retro styling of the tee paired with the classic femininity of the the crinoline skirt. This skirt reminds me of all those wonderful Christmas dresses I wore as a little girl. I opted for the mid calf length option to give it a little bit of extra drama and some weight so it didn’t flounce out too big. I think it will be an easy outfit to wear with classic black pumps and simple gold earrings for those semi casual gatherings. It’s also easy to dress up for more formal gatherings by adding more jewelry bling or switching out the top for a metallic gold sweater or beaded black sweater. When I think of this outfit, the image of a group of friends talking and laughing while drinking sparkling champagne comes to mind.

I already picked up a couple of other great options for wearing to holiday parties earlier this summer and fall. My favorite of these is a dress I’m planning on wearing on a holiday trip to Florida in December that is also a custom order from Eshakti.com.

Eshakti - Forties style red crepe dress

Eshakti – Forties style red crepe dress

This forties style crepe dress is the perfect example of what is possible with customizing from Eshakti.com. This image is the one from their site. Now imagine it with no sleeves and make it ankle length! It’s simply perfect. The brighter shade of red is perfect for a holiday party held in a warm climate. It’s also an easy style to dress up or down. By simply adding some sparkling jewelry, it looks very formal. Paired with a modern gold statement necklace, it has a great semi-formal cocktail feel to it. I also love that it can be paired with flats making it perfect for dancing the night away!

I love the versatility of the Annabelle dress from Eshakti.com below, so I’ve purchased it in both red and black this year. This style is so easy to dress up or down, these dresses have become an easy go-to in my closet. Simply adding a statement necklace and heels take them from casual to wow.

Fortune Cookie - Las Vegas 2014The first things that come to mind when I think of Las Vegas are pools surrounded young, thin, beautiful women in tiny bikinis being oogled by young men during the day and clubs filled with these same young women in skin tight dresses and sky high heels at night. In reality, Vegas is much more diverse than that.  The streets, casinos, restaurants, and pools are filled with people of all shapes, sizes, and ages. On my annual trip to this surreal city this year, I was anxious to see if I would get the same kind of reactions to some of my favorite style looks as I do at home. I packed my bags full of custom made dresses from Eshakti.com, modern pieces from Igigi.com, and classic jackets from Lane Bryant in anticipation of spending 10 days in the city on business and on pleasure. Much to my delight, men and women who were complete strangers responded to my looks with compliments leaving me feeling encouraged about the move toward body acceptance in the US.

My husband first noticed that my style was attracting the attention of men and women alike as we walked and shopped our way from Treasure Island through the Fashion Show Mall our first weekend in town. He kept noting that people were staring at me and he couldn’t quite figure out why. Being all too familiar with my unique style, he was feeling a little perplexed and agitated at first and then the compliments started coming. Not once during our trip did we see anyone in anything even similar to what I was wearing, which I imagine is part of the reason for the unusual attention.

Upon my husband’s departure on Sunday morning, I decided to brave a solo trip to the pool for a much need soak in the hot tub. I could see the area from my room window and it look pretty deserted since it was still morning. Figuring the worst thing that could happen would be some snide comment, I set out to find my swimming suit. I’m really not sure what I was thinking when I packed, but didn’t bring any kind of cover up. Quickly assessing my options in the closet, I opted to slip on a black knit knee length skirt and hot pink cardigan over my black and white polka dot swimming suit  and my favorite slides.  Sunglasses perched on top my head and room key card in hand, I headed to the pool. I felt pretty confident in the look I put together as I headed through the casino to the pool. It looked resort casual and didn’t draw any strange looks.

Arriving at the pool, I grabbed a towel from the towel desk. Much to my delight, they were nice big towels designed to cover a lounge chair instead of those tiny ones you typically see in hotels. I found a lounge chair in the second row near the hot tub and slipped off my skirt, cardigan, and shoes and made my way to the hot tub are with my towel. There were a few people already in this huge outdoor hot tub including a couple of older men, three older women, a young couple, and two kids. They made for a nice sampling of all kinds of body shapes, ages, and levels of fitness. I found a nice spot in the shade so I didn’t get sunburned and relaxed. Everyone pretty much kept to themselves, so I took a good look around the pool area to see what kinds of people were there. The stereotypical image I had held in my head quickly vanished as I noticed that everywhere I looked were simply real people enjoying themselves of this warm, sunny morning. About a quarter of the crowd was made up of curvy women like myself wearing a mixture of one-piece suits, tankinis, and bikinis. And you know what? No one was staring at anyone with a disapproving look or appeared to be gossiping about them. In fact, a smile or two passed between some of the curvy women I observed as they walked past each other – perhaps a quiet bit of support and approval. While this wasn’t my first time wearing my swimming suit in a big public place, it was the first time I was completely alone. It proved to be a good experience. Sometimes being alone makes us feel very vulnerable and even fearful. But I really wasn’t there all alone because I was in the good company of lots of other people just as perfectly imperfect as me. I left the pool that day feeling good about people in general.

The week days were filled with conference sessions and networking events.  One of the things I always love about conferences is the opportunity to build new friendships.  This trip provided plenty of opportunities for just that.  I met some delightful women and men alike this year. I kept my weekday attire to professional looks mostly, so I wasn’t expecting anyone to take much notice of them.  Mid week though, I was treated to style compliments from a group of very savvy women all looking fabulous themselves. It really came as quite a surprise to me since these types of compliments are seldom shared in this kind of environment. I did have one really interesting experience with this small group of women though related to body acceptance. There were four of us one morning walking in from the conference shuttle to breakfast together enjoying some female camaraderie in a vast room filled primarily with men. We represented a variety of sizes; at first glance I guessed we spanned a size range from 10 to 22 and an age range of 35-55. This is where the compliment came in, one of the other women on the higher end of this size range complimented my clothes and I shared with her that the dresses I had been wearing were mostly from Eshakti.com and were made to custom size since she too looked like finding a great fit off the rack might be challenging. I also noted that I thought they offered from size 8 to 34 or so. One of the other women commented they thought that was great as it’s so hard for most women to get a good fit, but that she was miraculously lucky to fit a standard size 12 off the rack for sheath style dresses. Myself and the other larger woman commented how lucky she was and the third stated she was a size 4. This statement seemed a bit out of place in the conversation but we tried to move on. And then she shanghaied the conversation and turned it to be about how much weight she had lost, showing everyone a composite before and after shot of herself, and going on and on about how sick she had been before she lost the weight and stopped eating breads and sugar and so on. (Please note that we were all eating bagels or breads for breakfast since this all that was available.) Our wonderfully supportive conversation turned negative very quickly as the other larger woman felt a need to justify her good health at her weight  according to her doctor and detail her efforts to exercise and loose weight. The woman who said she fit a size 12 got up and left feeling so uncomfortable and saddened by the conversation. I stayed to try to support the other woman who felt she needed to defend herself. This need by the woman who lost weight to make herself seem better than the rest of us put an end to our little group beyond that morning.  It was sad. While I was happy for this woman since she had improved her health, I was also saddened by her need to compare herself to the rest of us. While her body may be slim, I don’t think she’s in a really good place yet mentally with her body and I feel for her. I spoke with the woman who rated herself as a size 12 later on and she revealed how upset she was by where this other woman took the conversation and how she wanted to wrap the larger woman in a huge blanket of support. This led to a big discussion between us about our frustration with women who feel a need to tear other women down to make themselves feel better and how in a world that does us all enough damage this needs to stop. I couldn’t agree more and was thrilled when she shared her idea for creating a support network for women. Supporting each other is so fundamental to our universal success that her idea can’t help but be a success. I walked away from this conference feeling more determined than ever to support this movement of body acceptance.

Time for just my husband and I to enjoy each other’s company is precious and so very limited with our professions, so I was really looking forward to our second weekend together alone. Before this trip, it had been 10 months since we had some quality us time, so I wanted to look my very best for him. I saved some of my personal favorites for our second weekend in Vegas since we had plans to attend a Cirque show, take in some fine dining, and party a bit. Plus, I always like to end a trip on a high note!  I must admit, I took great pleasure in seeing the look on his face as he received compliments about the woman on his arm. No matter how good I feel about how I look, there’s always something uniquely delightful about receiving a compliment from a stranger. We also made a trip to the pool as a couple during this weekend and for a second time, nothing crazy happened, no one stared, and no disapproving comments were heard. [On another note, contrary to what the commercials of late would have you believe, people with Psoriasis also can go out in public uncovered without causing disruption. My husband has had this skin condition as long as I’ve known him and from time to time we do run into an uninformed person or two that thinks it’s some kind of open wound and/or contagious. But unlike the commercials, I’m not for my husband taking a drug that is known to cause cancer to temporarily minimize the appearance of these flaky patches of skin that eventually resolve themselves.]

Here is a look at the outfits that drew the most compliments during this trip:

Dress from Igigi.com Dress from Eshakti.com Dress from Eshakti.com Dress from Eshakti.com Dress from Eshakti.com

Looking at these, my signature style is pretty clear. I love the colors red, black, and white. A v-neck or sweetheart neckline is my preference to flatter my smaller bustline. A full skirt works really well over my full hips. I love statement necklaces! I will admit, though I intended to wear these strappy sandals while traveling, I most often traded them in for the slides or black flats since I did a lot of walking and being older and wiser, I’m just not into punishing my feet anymore.

My husband and I will be making our annual visit to Vegas in October so deciding what to wear has been on my mind for weeks; ok maybe months. It’s the only trip we take without the family, so planning a fun and romantic trip is top priority. We usually stay at Excalibur since it’s close to New York New York and MGM, but this time we decided to treat ourselves and will be staying at Treasure Island. We had such a blast at Kahunaville last time, we wanted to stay close by. Oh, and this time we’re actually staying two weekends in a row; my husband will fly in and out for work. This trip is our opportunity to decompress and have some fun as a couple, so we’re planning on taking in Zumanity and Beacher’s Madhouse; Zumanity is a must for an couple spending the weekend in Vegas – check it out if you haven’t seen it! Top off those plans with some sight-seeing and fine dining and we have the perfect weekend.

This great mix of activities requires some fabulous fashion. Since finding stylish plus size clothes can be challenging any day, I started my search early and looked to some of my favorite plus size retailers to deliver just the right styles for my trip.

I found this black dress from Eshakti.com in their bridal section in August. I already had the red one below, so I knew it would be fabulous. The dress is made of crepe fabric and is well lined. The skirt is full and it has wonderful big pockets. Adding a little white sweater dresses it down a bit making it perfect for daytime wear. It’s really a very comfortable dress and will work with flats for doing a lot of walking.vegas-7style-audacity
When I saw this dress from Eshakti.com, it was love at first sight. The cream and black is very trendy this season and the Grecian styling is very flattering. It looks perfect for wearing to dinner with a black pashmina. The length is perfect for heels or flats, making it a great for taking an after dinner stroll in. As usual, I had it custom made, so the fit is perfect. This dress is also made of crepe, which is my favorite fabric for dresses at this shop. vegas-8style-audacity
Red is my husband’s favorite dress color, so naturally I’m packing this dress from Eshakti.com in red too. It’s just like the black one and looks smashing with a bold statement necklace and strappy sandals. Perhaps I’ll wear this one to Beacher’s Madhouse or maybe to Kahunaville since it moves great for dancing.vegas-11style-audacity
Now for something casual! This dress is my favorite find from Eshakti.com’s fall collection. It’s so comfortable in the ankle length skirt. I love the draped front, which makes it a little more special than your typical knit dress. All I need is to slip on some flats and I’m ready to go check out the sights!vegas-12style-audacity
This dress made me take the leap from Igigi.com browser to buyer! I absolutely love the print and shrug. It’s perfect for a night at the theater followed by dancing the night away. I’ve been dying to wear this dress since it arrived this summer. The fabric is so wonderful and moves with all kinds of drama.vegas-10style-audacity
What’s a romantic weekend without a comfy bodycon dress to show off your curves? I love the rich color of this one from Asos.com and found this perfect floral print kimono to pair it with there too. A kimono works great with a bodycon dress to give you a little extra coverage or warmth on cool Vegas nights.vegas-2style-audacity
This cream and black outfit is one of my favorites for spending some casual time taking in the sights. It’s all about comfort and ease of wear. The swing tank top is from Evans.com, the cami is from LaneBryant.com, and the skirt is from Zulily.com. It’s all made from really light weight materials, making it the perfect option for a hot day on the strip. If it happens to be chilly, I can always add the black blazer from the next outfit or a pashmina.vegas-14style-audacity
Let’s not forget something stylish, yet comfortable to fly home in! I love these window pane print pants in crepe and easy black t-shirt I picked up at LaneBryant.com last spring. The jacket is one I picked up from LaneBryant.com this fall. I like a jacket for flying since airplanes can be rather chilly. Plus, I can easily put the earrings and any other accessories I decide to wear in my jacket pocket until I get through security since it has to come off anyways.vegas-13style-audacity

Overall, I love this combination of outfits to carry me through a couple romantic weekends with my husband. There are so many stylish clothes for plus size women available today, the really hard part was narrowing down my choices so they would all fit in one suitcase! The real key in packing is keeping the number of pairs of shoes you’re taking to a reasonable number since they tend to take up the most space in your suitcase. Plus, you need to leave some room to bring home souvenirs and great style finds. Fashion Show Mall here I come (another great reason to stay at Treasure Island since it’s across the street)!

The whole idea of traveling to a conference is enough to make many plus size women nervous and if Vegas is the destination, it can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared. I’ve made this trip several times now and can give you some tips on what to wear and how to get there comfortably. Vegas is a blast no matter your size if you go prepared.

I’m heading to Vegas in October for my annual trip to Pubcon. It’s a marathon 4 days of learning, networking, and partying. And walking – lots and lots of walking. Did I mention the walking? Pubcon is something you should train for, like a marathon. I don’t recommend taking a pedometer, it’s more likely to be discouraging versus motivating, especially after a couple days. The days start early and nights run late; it’s really better to focus on the overall experience versus the details of how many miles you’ve put in and how few hours of sleep you’ve had. Trust me, it’s all worth it or I wouldn’t go back year after year. This year, we’ll be staying at Treasure Island and the conference is at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Travel
Let me start off by saying the dumbest thing I’ve ever done is travel by plane in shapewear. It might seem like a good idea at first, but it’s not. First off, you’ll be sitting for hours between the airport and flight itself. Most shapewear I’ve worn just isn’t very comfortable for sitting in for hour after hour on end. Next, can you imagine trying to wiggle in and out of it in an airplane restroom? This is not workable. Then there’s the whole seat belt issue. Compressing everything so you fit neatly into your seat might seem like a good idea at first, but it also makes it impossible to “squish” your body around. This can take you from easily putting your seat belt on to making it impossible without a seatbelt extender. Now, I have no issue in asking for a seat belt extender personally, but I know a lot of people who would rather die than ask for one. If this is an issue for you, definitely skip the shapewear. If you’re planning on wearing something that really needs it, stash it in your luggage and put it on when you land. The same concept applies to really tight clothes, just don’t go there!

Here are a few other tips to make your flight the best it can be:

  • Wear something stylish, walk with confidence onto the plane, and avoid wearing perfume. If you look and act like this trip is business as usual, people tend to follow your lead.
  • Checking your luggage and carrying on only the essentials will give you the maximum amount of time to get settled.
  • Check out the kind of plane you’ll be flying on before picking your seat to optimize your leg and seat room. Not all seats are created equal even on a plane. Some exit rows have extra narrow seats and some seats have arm rests that don’t raise. Coach seats typically fall in the 16-18 inch range. Know what you’re getting into before you fly.
  • Ask the flight attendant for a seat belt extender if you need one, most will be happy to get it for you and do so discretely. There’s no reason to be uncomfortable the entire trip wearing a seatbelt that is really tight even if you can get it latched. If you do run into someone rude, just shake it off, their attitude is their problem.
  • If you’re prone to retaining water, be sure to pack some diuretic pills, drink plenty of water, and get up and move around at the airport to keep it at bay.

What to Wear
Shoes – Your number one priority is comfortable shoes and more than one pair. At the very least, you’ll need flats and pumps. Remember, you’re going to be doing a ton of walking, so this is not the time to break in new shoes. Also, it doesn’t matter how cute your shoes are if they are giving you blisters and you can barely stand to walk in them. It’s not a bad idea to bring an emergency pair of flip flops or other sandals as a backup. I’m a fan of gel insoles and those little no show socks for heels to keep feet happy.

Cocktail Dress – There will be several parties, but public and private, so be sure to bring your favorite cocktail dress. I ordered mine this year custom made from Eshakti.com. If you don’t mind traveling with more than a carry on, bring two! You might want to take in a show or eat at one of the fine restaurants and shorts aren’t going to cut it.

Four Business or Business Casual Outfits – You’ll see people in all levels of dress, but I always think you should look your best when networking, so keep it business casual at least. You’ll want to dress in layers since the convention center is typically freezing cold while it’s still hot outside at this time of year in Vegas. A blazer or sweater and pashmina will keep you comfortable even in the chilliest of rooms, yet are easy to take off and carry back to your room at the end of the day. Pick a color palette and go with mix and match options to minimize the number of accessories you need. Start with a black, brown, or navy base and add pops of color to keep your look stylish while minimizing the number of bags you’re going to need.

Casual Outfit – Toss in one or two casual outfits to wear in the evening so you can comfortably take in the sights and travel home.

Miscellaneous

  • If you’re not planning on wearing a blazer, you might want to toss in a light jacket since it can get cool in the desert at night.
  • Plan on enjoying the hotel pool? Don’t forget your swimsuit, cover up, and sandals.
  • Throw in at least one set of PJs to wear – you never know if there will be a fire alarm pulled or something crazy.
  • I know it seems really obvious, but make sure you bring the right under garments for each outfit. There is nothing more frustrating than finding you brought all black undies and they show through your black and white dress.
  • Bring at least one pair of socks to wear at night to cover up your well-lotioned feet that need some serious pampering.
  • Keep your accessories to a minimum. You don’t want to lose your favorite pieces while traveling. Try to multipurpose accessories whenever you can.

The most important thing is to remember to be flexible, have fun, and network your booty off. Get out of your comfort zone – way out! Pubcon is a great place to build new business relationships and make friendships that will last for many years to come.
